No Way Home ‘Theory launches a Maguire / Electro face-to-face
The second trailer for Spider-Man: No Path Home has outright confirmed that at least five villains from the franchise’s past will return in the next trio. Namely, Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Lizard (Rhys Ifans) and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). While marketing has portrayed Tom Holland’s Peter Parker face to face on their own, fans are confident that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will drop by to help him. But what villains will each Spidey fight?
Reddit user u / JetSpark123 shared a compelling theory on the u / MarvelStudios subreddit that suggests we can expect a battle between Maguire’s webhead and Foxx’s Max Dillon. The theory grew out of a much-discussed moment in the trailer. Although the shot shows Holland standing alone against Sandman, Lizard, and Electro, Lizard can be seen retreating from an invisible blow. It is generally accepted that it must be one of the other Spideys digitally removed from the scene.
The theorist argues that it must be Garfield. Originally appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man, Dr. Curt Connors is an enemy with a strong personal connection to Garfield’s version of the hero, so it makes sense that they will fight once again in this movie. Going through the trailer, Holland will next take on Sandman. This leaves Maguire as the only one free to fight with Electro. As to why he would be best suited for this job, the Redditor reminds us that Maguire is the only one who has organic web shooters, so he doesn’t have to worry about his mechanical shooters being damaged by electricity from Dillon.
It’s a very interesting theory that fits all the evidence we’ve seen so far. While Maguire vs. Sandman would be the more obvious choice, part of the fun of this crossover is that the Spideys fight different villains, so it would be a mess if the movie missed that opportunity. We’ll find out what’s in store for wall-crawlers when Spider-Man: No Path Home hits theaters on December 17th.
