How to create questionnaires to collect data, conduct surveys and quizzes with Google
Imagine, you have to throw a party and collect RSVPs. Or, you are a statistician who needs to collect data for a study; Maybe you are a teacher who needs to create a quiz for your students, or as an executive you need to prepare a quick poll.
All of these tasks, while simple, can be time consuming, laborious and repetitive; they could include hours spent on phone calls, tabbing, entering data into Excel spreadsheets, etc. Now imagine if there was a free, easy way to do all of this and more.
If you have a Google Account, you get a free tool known as Google Forms that lets you do all of this quickly and easily.
- After logging into your account, look for forms, among others Google workspace cloud apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
- The free cloud app lets you use your photo or logo and then it will pick the right colors to help you create a unique form. Alternatively, you can choose from a set of themes organized to set the tone.

When a new form loads …
It comes with two tabs: Questions and Answers.
- In the first tab, you can build your form, question by question, choosing from 11 options for your requests.
- These options include Short Response (for entries such as names and addresses), Paragraph (for longer responses), Multiple Choice (conditional radio buttons that allow you to jump to different sections of the quiz based on your choice) Checkboxes (for more than one correct answer), Drop-down menus (for single-choice answers), File Download (to request file entries), Date and time fields, etc.
- Each question can include an image or a video.
- Forms comes with a response validation feature that lets you use rules. For example, in a school test that asks students to identify a scientist, you could use an image of Isaac Newton and then set a response validation: the text contains “Newton”, otherwise the student receives a message from error which could be “Wrong answer, try again”.
- You can also require that the response include only an email address or a URL.
- Google Forms allows you to force users to fill out the necessary fields before submitting a form.
- From the Responses tab, you can automatically create a spreadsheet file in your Google Drive account that stores all the responses to your form.
- You also get effective tools that create color-coded tables and charts of all the responses you receive for a quick visual representation.
Simply put, Forms is an easy to use tool that allows you to collect data and tabulate it very efficiently. You get all the features you would need to build forms with page branches. This means that you can design a single form, in which respondents over a certain age see one set of questions, while everyone else receives another set.
