Chess can simply be called the game of life. Each individual, like chess pieces, has many choices to make leading to an endless number of possibilities. In large part, our lives as we lead them are the result of some great or awful choices we make in the course of our lifetimes. But have you ever imagined what the consequences might have been if you hadn’t made these decisions? It certainly gives food for thought.
Apoorva Ganapathy, a gifted software engineer of Indian origin, who works with Adobe Inc. as a senior AEM engineer, had all the skills needed to be a world-class chess player. Apoorva has been fascinated by the game of chess since childhood. He was born into a family of chess masters including his parents, aunt and uncle, and started playing at the age of five. Apoorva quickly excelled in the game of chess under their tutelage. He won the State Under-8 title and has represented Karnataka in many national competitions. Apoorva has participated in more than 250 state and 25 national chess competitions. His family were thrilled with his achievements in the game and he won over fifty trophies in various age groups and open categories. Apoorva won the State Under-15 Championship twice in a row and the State Under-19 Championship after moving to Bengaluru, where his father worked for a national textile company. He couldn’t afford expensive elite level training to continue working on his game because he came from a low income family. Lack of funds, however, never deterred him from pursuing his desire to become a chess genius, and he worked tirelessly to achieve his goal. Apoorva took the bus to chess tournaments and often had to walk home with a sparkling but heavy trophy, which he carried about 4 kilometers to reach his home.
A distressing event, not hardships, diverted his attention from failures to technology. Apoorva was surprised to see his mother cry over their empty food stores, not knowing how she was going to feed her children, dinner, when he unexpectedly returned home to look for something he had forgotten. After witnessing his mother’s helplessness, Apoorva vowed that he would ensure that her mother never encountered financial difficulties in her life. Apoorva continued to play chess for some time, but his focus shifted to making a successful career fit for providing financial security to those around him.
Apoorva put blood, sweat and tears during his school career to become an expert professional worthy of competing against the best veterans in the computer industry. He discovered his love and passion for technology in grade ten when he achieved an impressive score of 90% and then chose physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science as an elective course during his studies. secondary school at Seshadripuram College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology in Bengaluru and a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Manipal. During his academic career he was a successful student who also excelled in school and co-school activities. He has been captain of the engineering college team in several national university championships. He has actively mentored other students, organized highly interactive workshops, and even lectured to foster collaborative learning. He even put his passion into action by teaching young students to play chess.
By making chess an integral part of his life, Apoorva has developed strong strategic and tactical skills which, together with an ability to adapt and improvise according to situations, have helped him to excel in his professional life to achieve a supersonic career progression speed and become a smash hit in the computer industry. Today, Apoorva is an enthusiastic and hardworking IT specialist with a track record of exceeding the expectations of top clients such as Royal Mail, Tech Target, AIG Insurance, Hyatt Hotels, Mastercard, AT&T, SiliconLabs, and others while working on 18 critical projects.
