AltStore error ‘The directory is not empty’ prevents installation on Windows

AltStore, as the name suggests, is an alternative app store for iOS devices. Many users install this store to get apps that let them get the most out of their phones and tablets.
However, according to several reports, the latest AltStore update does not allow users to install the store on their iOS devices through Windows operating system (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12).
AltStore installation failed after last update
To install AltStore on your iOS device, you need to download AltServer, a program that runs from your computer (macOS or Windows). It is via AltServer that you can directly load AltStore on your iPhone or iPad.
That said, the most recent AltStore update does not complete this process. Many users report that they just get an annoying “delete: directory is not empty” error.
Don’t install the latest AltStore update if you like your jailbreak. You will get this message: remove: The directory is not empty error “C: Users…. And you won’t be able to install Altstore or Jb on your phone. If anyone knows a solution to this problem, please share it. There are a lot of us with borked phones now that we can’t jailbreak and it really, really sucks.

I tried everything I could think of, and the google / reddit search was not helpful at all. I restarted my computer and iPhone, removed all apps installed by AltStore, and uninstalled and reinstalled AltServer, and still can’t get it to work. This tells me that a directory is not empty, but that directory literally does not exist.

12:25 (IST): A user responded to the problem with installing AltStore on Windows and suggested a workaround that could potentially help affected users.
Unplug your phone, run altstore, plug in the phone, choose show folder and files in explorer when it appears, you should now be able to connect. (Source)
4:40 p.m. (IST): The support team has confirmed that the “Directory is not empty” issue has been resolved and users can now install AltStore from Windows as usual.
